What Your Period Blood Says About Your Health
For many of us, our period has always been treated as nothing more than an inconvenience—something to manage, hide, and push through. But what if I told you that your menstrual blood is a powerful health report card, revealing insights about your hormones, circulation, and overall well-being?
Just like our skin, digestion, and mood, our period reflects what’s going on inside our bodies—but most of us were never taught how to read these signs. By paying attention to your flow, colour, and consistency, you can spot imbalances early and work with your cycle, not against it.
Let’s break down what your period blood is really telling you.
Your Flow: What It Means About Your Hormones
For many of us, our period has always been treated as nothing more than an inconvenience—something to manage, hide, and push through. But what if I told you that your menstrual blood holds valuable clues about your hormones, circulation, and overall well-being?
As a menstrual health educator, I’ve spent years helping women understand how their cycles reflect their inner health. The reality is that your period is a monthly health report card, and learning how to interpret it can help you identify potential imbalances before they turn into bigger issues.
Most of us were never taught how to read these signs, but by paying attention to your flow, colour, and consistency, you can spot imbalances early and work with your cycle, not against it.
What Your Flow Says About Your Cycle
💧 Light Flow – Can be linked to low estrogen, nutrient deficiencies, or chronic stress. If your periods are consistently light, it may indicate that your hormone levels are too low to build a healthy uterine lining, which can impact fertility and overall cycle regularity.
🌊 Heavy Flow – If you find yourself changing pads or tampons every 1-2 hours or experiencing extreme fatigue, this may indicate estrogen dominance, inflammation, or poor liver detoxification. Excess estrogen can build up when the body isn’t efficiently metabolizing hormones, often due to stress, poor diet, or environmental toxins.
🔴 Clotting – While small clots are normal, large or frequent clotting could be a sign of poor circulation, low progesterone, or uterine stagnation. This is often linked to cold uterus in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which suggests that poor blood flow and hormone imbalances may be disrupting your cycle.
What Your Period Blood Colour Means
🔴 Bright Red → A healthy, balanced cycle with strong circulation and optimal hormone levels.
🍷 Dark Red or Brown → Indicates old blood that wasn’t fully shed in a previous cycle, often pointing to sluggish circulation or low progesterone.
⚪ Pale or Watery → Could signal low iron levels, low estrogen, or overall nutrient deficiencies. If you often feel lightheaded or fatigued during your period, this is worth investigating.
Your Period is a Window Into Your Health
Your cycle is always communicating with you, and ignoring its signals can mean missing out on early signs of hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, or deeper health issues. The good news?
